What makes a tough opening hole?
For me, it’s all about whether or not there is out-of-bounds or a penalty area in play. The thought of one poor swing leading to an immediate double (or worse) is tough to shake when standing over the first few shots of the day. Players at the PGA Championship this week at Aronimink will have OB in play on the first shot as white stakes run up the left side of the opening par 4, shown below. When we asked our 1,800+ course-ranking panelists to identify the toughest opening holes in golf, Aronomink narrowly missed the top 10. Searching for common traits throughout the list, our panelists seem to fear large, severely sloped greens. I don’t know, I’d take an opening three putt over an OB ball…
