For me, it’s all about whether or not there is out-of-bounds or a penalty area in play. Players at the PGA Championship this week at Aronimink will have OB in play on the first shot as white stakes run up the left side of the opening par 4, shown below. When we asked our 1,800+ course-ranking panelists to identify the toughest opening holes in golf, Aronomink narrowly missed the top 10.
