The tearful new dad called his first victory in 80 starts the “best week of my life.” Unfortunately, emotions are running in the opposite direction now. With his two-year winner's exemption coming to an end, Campos is 168th in the Fall Series and in serious danger of losing his card. Which is why shooting a two-eagle 64 on Friday in the Vidanta Mexico Open was enormous relief, even if he stands T-34 going into the weekend.
“Emotionally, oh, my gosh. One, it's a little weight off my back right now,” said Campos, 38, who has misssed 16 of 23 cuts this season. “I'm in a horrible … I'm pretty far down there. … I only have four tournaments left. Unfortunate to put that much pressure on yourself but I am in that spot right now. I've been there before and things have changed. I'm not quitting, I'm not giving up at no point although it feels pretty off right now.”
As observers, we usually have no idea what truly is going through the mind of a player in Campos’ spot, so to hear him share how difficult it is feels both wrenching and elightening.
“Not having a job for next year right now is very painful. Very, very painful,” he said. “I mean, very depressing to see the way I've been playing golf these last couple years. Like I said, there's still chances. As long as there's chances at tournaments, we can change our life immediately, which I did a couple years ago and I'm hoping to do it again hopefully soon.”
