Overview
Sedge Valley is architect Tom Doak’s homage to the early 20th century, sub-par 70 courses popular in the London heathlands and throughout the U.K. Tipping the scales at less than 6,000 yards and par 68, it might seem like light fare but it isn’t—this is real golf that demands confident driving and smart approaches into a set of small, distinguished green complexes. Though located in proximity to Sand Valley’s original course, Sedge feels like it's in a different state. Formal bunkers replace the exposed sand borders common at the other resort courses, and the routing circles through meadows of mostly hardwoods rather than lumber pine. While the par 4s are short, only a few, like the sixth and 18th, are drivable for regular players, and resort guests don’t come away thinking the course is too short or a pushover. It’s simply another aspect of this remarkably diverse place in central Wisconsin and a refreshing change of pace from not just the rest of Sand Valley but also from the slog of big, brawny, 7,200-yard, par-72 courses that have dominated golf for the past 70 years.

“Sedge Valley, a part of the Sand Valley golf resort in rural Northern Wisconsin, was designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2024. It is a walking only course and while it plays to only 5,808 yards from the black tees, it does not lack in difficulty. With the relatively short overall course length, there are still five tee options allowing for all levels of play. The course has only one par 5 and several of the par 4s are relatively short and in addition there are 5 par 3s accounting for the overall short length of the course. It is a heatherland style golf course similar to the kinds of courses found in the U.K. Off of the tee box, the golfer hits into fast, running fairways bordered by heather and gorse like rough framed by pine trees on a number of holes. Tee shot location is critical in order to attack an open green. Second shots are into relatively well protected, contoured greens. The generally small greens are hard and firm putting premium on shot accuracy. The well conditioned greens are contoured and insures the golfer understand the breaks to score well. Scoring opportunities arise in the several short par 4s including holes 6, 12 and 18 (although 18 has a significant elevation increase). Overall, while Sedge Valley is relatively short in length it provides strategic challenges on nearly every hole with emphasis on precision and shot making. It provides a fun and unique golfing experience for every level of golfer."

“Fun course with a few too many short par 4's. Number 3 is a great dogleg left with a heaping bunker. The fifth hole is a gorgeous "short" par 3. The tenth is a great par 4 and the 18th is a very interesting uphill par 4. The course played hard and fast. It's an imaginative layout and the par 3's are standouts. The green complexes are amazing and the fairways jut out into corners and some small slivers. The fairways get tighter as you get closer to the green. Reminded me of Swinley Forest."

“A bit more reminiscent of some of the courses in the UK. Don't let the par 68 fool you. Though there are a couple of drivable par 4's, they're not simple. And the lone par 5 is plenty challenging from the back tee as is the par 3 8th at over 220 yards. As with the other courses at Sand Valley during our stay, in excellent condition."

Par can be elusive at times, as the course often plays longer than expected. The best golf appears after the eighth hole, where the course takes on a heathland feel, with greens that look melted onto the land instead of built on top of it. The course has teeth, though, in its many uphill shots and on its beguiling greens. With no wind, preferred shots are obvious, but when the breeze is up, the player must consider other options, which makes it a highly thought-provoking course. Once again, Doak met the challenge of building on a site similar to nearby courses but with an entirely different - and exceptional - outcome."
