Overview
The Lido at Sand Valley in central Wisconsin opened in May 2023 and is a down-to-the-inch recreation of The Lido that C.B. Macdonald built on Long Island from 1914 to 1917. Heralded as one of the country’s greatest courses, it went extinct in the 1940s when the U.S. government converted the land to a naval base. The Lido is alive again as a private club associated with Sand Valley Resort. The club operates in the same vein as the clubs of the British Isles, allowing select play from resort guests on Mondays through Thursdays.
Rebuilding The Lido has been the fantasy of many historians, but doing so accurately became possible when Peter Flory, a financial consultant and architecture enthusiast, developed a detailed computer simulation of the course based on scrupulous study of old photographs and other material. Sand Valley proprietors Michael and Chris Keiser discovered Flory’s computer model, then asked architect Tom Doak if he could use it to rebuild the course.
First, the animated contours had to be translated into a physical GPS topographical blueprint, a technological hack accomplished by digital mapping specialist Brian Zager. The GPS map enabled Doak and his associates to reconstruct Lido holes like Plateau, Alps, Cape and Long in exquisite detail, along with originals like the Dog's Leg sixth and the Home 18th, making only minor adjustments for drainage and adding longer tees for modern play. Though there’s no Atlantic Ocean crashing near the Biarritz eighth green or stiff coastal winds swatting around balls, the ”new” Lido is a stunning representation of Macdonald’s groundbreaking accomplishment and a vivid throwback to a more daring era of architecture.
Using the spacious hole corridors to explore different routes into the giant greens is half the fun. Contemplating players navigating holes like the Channel fourth, with an alternative island fairway for daring hitters and a green perched behind a high rampart bunker, using hickory shafts and Haskell balls, is the other half.

“Loved the story and history on the course it was a treat to get out and play. Especially loved the template holes. #10 (Alps) was a special hole and this walk was really enjoyed. It's a modern course with all of the makings of an old school design. I love C.B McDonald and this course embodies that!!"

“"I'm not quite sure what to write about the Lido. On one hand, it's one of the most audacious designs I've ever played. Some of the holes are one-of-a-kind, legendary type holes. The course rewards great shots and offers strategic advantages to well-thought out shots. On the other hand, several of the tee shots feel very similar, sort of blind with several outlying bunkers on each side. It's hard to seperate holes like 1, 2, 6, 11, and 18 even. They sit in my memory very similarly, but I'm sure thru multiple plays they would play quite different. On the whole, the Lido plays so much more extreme, so much more wild than any other Raynor I've played. - the par 3s are possible the best set of templates I've played. Up there with Camargo and Fishers. 3 is an excellent Eden, 8 is the Biarritz, 14 is a good short and 16 is a great redan - 4 is a wonderful par 5. I don't know how it would get much more strategic than that and can see why it became such a famous, mythical hole - 10, the Alps, is one of the coolest holes on property. I don't know why golf went away from holes like that - 12, Punchbowl is also another legendary golf hole with a difficult drive and one of the cooler second shots (non-ocean/water division) - 13 is where the course becomes weird. For modern golf the 14th is almost directly in the line of play for the 13th and the 15th isn't that much out of the way. It feels weird and very crammed in, it's certainly uncomfortable bordering on dangerous - while I feel 15 and 18 are both excellent golf holes, they both feel a very similar - it's also really strange to end the course in what feels like the middle of the rest of the course. It doesn't really matter on my opinoin of the golf course, just strange.""

“After hearing about the mythical Lido most of my life, it was fun to finally play a replica of the course designed in the early 1900's. It was a lesson in golf architecture. Just about every template golf hole is there. Eden, Cape, Hog's Back, Alps, Punch Bowl, Knoll, Short, Redan to name a few. Pretty amazing they were able to replicate this course in Central Wisconsin."

“The Lido is more than a golf course; it's an act of resurrection. Rebuilt from CB Macdonald's lost Long Island masterpiece, it captures the true spirit and strategy of golf. Deceptive sightlines, hidden hazards, and bold bunkers are everywhere, but they aren't unfair. They require the player to think, not just to swing. The greens are massive and complex, turning almost every putt into an adventure. Their internal contours demand skill and curiosity. Shot options abound, especially around green sites, where the player can choose from multiple trajectories and aiming points, and where commitment is required for the player to have any chance. All at once, it teaches and tests, leaving the golfer with only one questions at round's end: When am I coming back?"

“Wonderful walk back in time at this recreation of CB Macdonald's The Lido by Tom Doak on a sandy and firm site. The Channel #4 hole offers amazing options off the tee and with the approach to this risk/reward par 5. Some incredible green sites including #4, #8(Biarritz), #10(Alps), #12(Punch Bowl), #14, and #16(Redan)."

“Supposedly nearly exact replica of old C B MacDonald course from pre-WW II course. Great concept adds to Character of course. Unfortunately cannot reproduce ocean holes in central Wisconsin. Some holes have no clear path to green & shots that appear to be good end up in hidden bunkers."

“The Lido is a semi-private golf course but as a guest at Sand Valley Golf Resort, you can have access on a limited basis. With that said, get this course on your rotation when you travel to the property as it is a fantastic golf experience, full of history and remakes that will only add to your appreciation of classic golf designs from the Golden years. It's a lot of fun."

“What a wonderful treat to play CB Mcdonald's treasured The Lido here in Wisconsin no less. Just a fantastic walk with challenge and diversity in hole designs one after another. And playing this course is a great walk of history appreciating what was created back in 1917. Very cool course on every level and deserves lots of accolades for this semi-private golf course."
