“Very enjoyable course to play. Despite the fact it runs through a housing development, it is aesthetically pleasing. Most tee shots are downhill, lots of short par 4's which makes it a little more fun. Fairways are zoysia and ball really sits up on them. A well delivered Fazio course."

“The Virginian is an impressive Club on the TN-VA border with an 18-hole championship design from Tom Fazio. The property is massive, with hundreds of acres of fun including 3 extra practice holes, a full range, a winery (!), and numerous other amenities. The course itself, like many in Fazio's portfolio, winds its way through some beautiful houses in hilly western VA. When I was there, the course was lush, but perhaps too much so as there was no roll in the fairways, slow greens, and what seemed to be water damage or a fungus in the fairways. The course is plenty fair but can be a challenge from the 7000 yard Back tees with plenty of hazards and elevation change to contend with. Standout holes include the number 1 handicap 4th, with its Lion's mouth green and thrilling downhill teeshot, as well as the gorgeous par 3 8th that sits in the corner of the property and plays over water. The 13th is another impressive par 3, stretching to over 240 yards from the Tips and playing over a valley with a gorgeous farmland backdrop. This is a very solid course overall and would be a lovely place to have property at."

“The Virginian is set on a beautiful property that is well suited for championship golf. The most noteworthy holes were the par 4 5th hole with water down the left, but inviting the player to play boldly to setup a potential birdie opportunity. The par 4 6th was a challenging longer uphill par 4 that requires a precise tee shot through the trees to an elevated and well guarded green. The par 3 8th hole provided a beautiful downhill aesthetic. The par 3 13th was very long at 240 yards, but had an amphitheater green that pushed a ball that nearly hit the green closer to the flag. The par 3 15th had contour on the right side of the green that moved balls toward a center pin."

“The Virginian is a prototypical Tom Fazio design that winds through a high-end housing development, where the houses never intrude and the cart paths are always well hidden. The (more interesting) front nine makes good use of the rollicking terrain, whereas the back nine has more of an open, expansive farmland feel. Fazio loves downhill holes and The Virginian has them in spades. The advantage is that this allows you to see most of the hole and strategize accordingly. The disadvantage is that it tends to become repetitive and some of the holes, despite their inherent strategic value, begin to blend together. All of the very large greens are sectored off by a ridges that run in every possible orientation. This also allows for some very difficult hole location options where it is paramount to hit the proper sector. Otherwise, the greens are not overly difficult, nor are the green surrounds. There are six tee options and six hybrid options, so the course can be managed by various skill levels. The Virginian is a beautiful property with a well-maintained and interesting golf course that should present enough challenge to keep most golfers interested on a regular basis."

“A community course with not much of a challenge, too many short par 4's, not driveable ones, but short ones. Not one of Fazio's best."

“The Virginian is your typical Tom Fazio layout in a very nice upscale housing development. It has reachable par 5's, a risk\reward drivable par 4, and par 3's from varying lengths. If you play the championship tees, the only difference is the last 2 holes are a 500 yard par 4 and a 600 yard par 5."

“Very solid track with good conditions. Most all the Par 4s on the front sit in a valley so your tee ball has side boards. All the greens are divided into front/ back halves OR left and right halves. In my opinion it's not great, but definitely worth the opportunity to play if you get a chance."
