“An extremely nice public course located off of I-95....relatively close to Richmond and about an hour south of DC. This course is set on hilly terrain which comes into play on a number of holes which increases the difficulty in club selection throughout the round. The 11th hole offers a unique split fairway and the entire course boasts a number of multi level green complexes which increases shot options to a major degree. A diverse layout variety was well conceived by the course architect, Mr. Bob Lohmann. I consider this a must play if in the area."

“Mattaponi Springs is cut through the pines and has significant elevation changes. The bermuda fairways play rather firm and are somewhat generous. The large bent grass greens have significant undulation and are receptive. The greens roll relatively true. The 4 Par 3s vary in length and elevation from the short downhill 3rd hole to the long slightly uphill 14th hole. The Par 4s vary in design and length from the very challenging 9th hole (dogleg right) and 18th hole (dogleg left) that both require carry across ravines, to the short 5th and 15th holes which are scoring opportunities with good risk/reward. The Par 5s are all reachable - the uphill dogleg right 2nd hole is well bunkered and has a challenging green complex, the downhill 6th hole is true green light with little trouble. The short Par 5 16th hole requires a precise 2 shot with water right and trouble left."

“Mattaponi Springs demonstrates reasonable Shot Values, Resistance to Scoring and Design Variety. Unfortunately the course is tired, suffering from the same issues many modern courses are dealing with today (too difficult for a 15+ handicapper, takes too long to play, too much course to maintain). Weeds were growing in all of the bunkers, fairways and greens were overgrown, yet the edge of the greens and slopes were burnt out/suffering from disease."

“This is a tremendous public-access design in a remote location but is well worth the trip. The very large greens are segmented and partitioned by huge swales and fall-offs. Every hole presents a unique challenge. Watch out for hidden hazards on several holes, but there are also plenty of risk-reward options. Hole No. 1 is about as intimidating an opening hole as you will ever play, and it sets you up for a round where trouble is always lurking. Unfortunately, the 9th hole is about as bad a hole as you will ever play, and if conditions are dry it is almost impossible to not lose your ball in the woods. This issue aside, this is a great, fun challenge and makes for a very satisfying day trip."
