Overview
Located just outside of Richmond, the Independence Golf Club's Championship course is Tom Fazio’s first public course in Virginia. Later renovated by Lester George, the course offers five sets of tees ranging from 5,000 to 7,100 yards, and boasts fast greens along with punishing bunkers. Renovations by Fazio's team earned an award among Golf Digest’s top 10 remodels of 2016.

“Independence Golf Club is a high-end public access facility near Richmond, VA. The former home of the Virginia State Golf Association, Independence was designed as a course where beginners could learn the game that simultaneously serves as a championship test for scratch players. These dual purposes are accomplished in numerous ways. With six sets of tees, the course plays from 7400 yards to 4000 yards. Fairways are extremely generous, with little OB, few penalty areas, and almost no force carries (from the appropriate tee box). Greens are huge...certainly among the largest in the state...with significant rolls, undulations, slopes, mounds, and trenches, and an almost infinite number of hole locations that can range from easier to quite challenging. Furthermore, nearly every green on the course is bunkered on either the front left or right, allowing for running approach shots. All greens also include extensive run-off areas cut to fairway height, allowing newbie golfers to putt while forcing single digit players to decide between a putt, bump & run, or lobbed approach. Cart paths and homes are set well back from the line of play, and the course is very walkable. The general lack of hazards does not generate much excitement or sense of accomplishment to the scratch golfer, as the main defense to scoring is distance and challenging greens. This lowers shot values. However, the layout is very accessible and fair to players at all levels, and the excellent condition makes Independence a great asset to public golf in greater Richmond."
