Overview
Highlands Golf Club, just north of Houston, opened in 2022 as the first course in the country to have Lazer Zoysia greens, a type of grass that’s uniquely suited for the harsh heat. The course has Zoysia throughout, so balls often sit up nicely on the fairways. Highland Pines sits near the banks of the San Jacinto River and winds through dense forest, offering a secluded feel. Given the course is near Bush airport, Highlands is a great course to play if you’re flying into Houston.

“Highland Pines in Porter, TX offers a unique golfing experience in the Greater Houston Area. The contour of the land allows for the course to display distinct holes, especially in the middle to late part of the round. Conditions are firm and fast, even after taking rain, and the greens have subtle contours that allow for interesting pin positions. Layout variety also adds variety to the round, with shifts of direction on almost every hole, bringing in the prevailing wind as a factor to consider. The course staggers doglegs right and left, which adds to the golfer's interest. The placement of hazards could be more strategic, howevrer. Often times hazards are placed away from the ideal line, answering that question for the golfer. Overall, this is a solid option if looking for golf around the Houston area."

“A parkland course with unusual elevation changes for Houston, it features zoysia fairways and greens and an excellent mix of holes. Challenging but very playable from the proper set of tees, the course provides country club amenities and feel to the public. A great place to spend a half a day."

“New public course outside Houston that will be part of a housing development. It features a new strain of Zoysia grass on the greens that rolled really nicely. The course also possesses much more elevation change that most Gulf Coast courses in the area. Good, solid public choice in an area that needed more public offerings."

“Course was still immature when I played it. Greens were rock hard, but they rolled great. This could be a fabulous course - and possibly get a higher rating as well - in the near future. I do think they charge too much, especially since it is a bit of a haul. There are rumors that it is going to go private in the near future. I hope not, because it is a nice option to have in the area."

“Zoysia fairways AND Greens. Very unusual for a public course in Texas. Fun routing except for the par 5 along the highway. That was odd. Good course for all skill levels and a nice value. Green fees in the $100 neighborhood for a good course."
