Overview

In a crowded, historic neighborhood with venues such as Turnberry, Royal Troon, Western Gailes and Prestwick up the road, Dundonald Links is the new kid on the block. Kyle Phillips got the job in the early 2000s after the successful opening of Kingsbarns. His task was to build a course that looks and feels like a links on decent land, formerly the site of a 1910s design by Willie Fernie, then demolished by both World Wars. Phillips’ routing is fantastic—with variability between nearly every hole, thus keeping golfers on their toes with wind direction. The land has great natural-looking movement, and Phillips’ greens have a ton of intrigue with various slants, tiers and undulations, especially on the back nine. A large investment from the Dundonald folks brought Phillips back in the early 2020s to renovate the course and add new luxury accommodations and a clubhouse, making Dundonald a great option for those seeking a home base for a trip on the Ayrshire coast.
