Overview
At The Tree Farm, PGA Tour player and founder Zac Blair has attracted a kindred young-in-spirit if not exclusively young-in-age membership from across the country that mirrors his infectious relaxed-casual passion for walking, fast play, head-to-head matches and creative architecture, particularly from the approach shot through the green. A majority of them are good players who think nothing of hoofing 36 or more holes a day. One of the club’s mottos, is “Play Fast and Don’t Be a Dick.” Another is “Slow Players Will Be Asked to Leave the Property.”
Design credit goes to multiple people, including Tom Doak, who routed the course over a gorgeously secluded site full of ridges, valleys and galleries of pine accented with scrub, sand and shades of underbrush, parts Pinehurst area and vintage Augusta National; Kye Goalby who designed the holes and features, and Blair, who was involved in all of the above. Most of Blair and Goalby’s fairways merely brush the land with a minimum of earthwork, draped around the curves of bunkers and ravines that tempt players to try and nip the corners. Highlights include a wonderful Redan par 3, a memorable punchbowl green at the par-5 16th, a mighty uphill par 3 (the fourth) modeled on the fifth at Pine Valley and some other subtle nods to template holes, but overall the architecture at The Tree Farm is organic and inspired primarily by what was already there, giving the course a budding air of sophisticated maturity. Some of the subtlest sections of the course, like the loop through a soothing cove of pines at five, six and seven, may be The Tree Farm’s most evocative, a resplendent sotto voce to the explosive aria of the final four holes that includes the Redan, a reachable par 5 with a corner-cut drive and deep punchbowl green, a short archery target par 3 and a downhill drivable par 4 with a split-level green similar to the 16th at Augusta National.

“Quirky Blair and Goalby course that is fun to play. I absolutely hated starting on a par three. Never played a course that started on a par three. There is a great mix of par 3's, especially the short seventeenth. The short par fours were also solid. The green contouring and size made the course. Tough greens to read and putt made for the need of a good caddie. The Tree Farm will get better with age."

“Tree Farm is a newly opened course in South Carolina between Aiken and Columbia. It is a very worthy new course to take its place amongst the other great courses in this area. The course is set in rolling hills and takes advantage of the ups and downs of the topography quite well. Great variety in the holes with many risk/reward shots giving the golfer the opportunity to challenge the course for better score or risk troubles along the way."

“I have played the course a number of times and it is now set up to begin on the original first hole after starting on the difficult fourth hole last year. This means it ends on the drivable 18th hole. I think the stand out holes are the fourth (similar to five at Pine Valley), 7th (a deceptively difficult short par four because of the green complex), 8th (long and difficult hole with a very interesting tee shot choice and a difficult green), 9th (a short par five with a significant penalty for missing on either side even though that is mostly just grass.). On the back nine, I found 11, 12, and 14 to be an interesting group of very difficult par fours. Green complexes are not as server as neighboring Old Barnwell, but are much faster and you must stay below the hole. There are numerous false sides and fronts that add to the difficultly. A fun day of golf."

“Tree Farm is new and is worth the hype. The course is just off interstate 20 between Columbia, SC and Aiken, SC, and now that the clubhouse and cottages are finished, is a great spot for both golf and hanging out overnight enjoying the quiet SC nights. Blair did a good job of mixing up the layout when working on this project. No 2 holes are the same length. There are also numerous template holes with the plateau 3rd, alps 10th, redan 15th, and the punchbowl 16th. The natural sandscapes around the fairways give it an Ohoopee look, while also keeping the "sandbelt" style in mind. Tree Farm is fully grown in and matured now, and should be given the opportunity to be visited by many panelists going forward. Personally I have Tree Farm as a top 5 course in SC."

“This course is taylor made for buddies trips. There a tons of memorable shots, a design that can challenge different handicap equally depending on the tees, and loads of short grass that makes it hard to lose a ball. Worth seeing the double punchbowl green on 16 as this panelist has never seen anything like it."

“This is a really fun course to play. It is on a large piece of land with good elevation changes and lots of design variety. It is in fact a former tree farm and the design takes good advantage of the trees and slopes. The fairways are huge but shots into the greens can be challenging. The greens are very big and fast with lots of mounds and slopes. There are numerous interesting holes starting with the par 3 first hole and finishing with four great fun holes from 14 to 18. The middle tees are only 6445 yards but include 6 par fours of over 400 yards that often play longer because they are uphill and into the wind. These are balanced out by a couple really good short par 4’s including the easily driveable 18th. Overall a great new layout that visually attractive and great fun."

“Fun is the first word that comes to mind thinking back on this round....the architects do a great job of using width and angles to create interest on several tee shots as well as approaches. Several standout holes....most notably the 4th(that is inspired by the 5th at Pine Valley), the 13th which is a boomerang par 5 around a dramatic ravine, and the 15th which perhaps has one of the best Redan green sites anywhere. A great balance of difficult holes and birdie opportunities. In addition to the previously mentioned Redan green on 15, a few other incredible greens including the Punchbowl 16th, the infinity green on the reachable par 5 ninth hole, and the drivable finishing hole."
