“Less than one hour from Pinehurst, this Tom Jackson design surprises and enthralls at every turn, especially on the back nine, where Lake Juniper factors into your golf shots and golfing views. The front nine runs inland but the back is where this course comes into its own. Every hole is a manicured, strategic gem. The dogleg left, 424-491 yard, par-4, 13th is spectacular. It’s a deserving #1 handicap and one of the most beautiful holes in this region or anywhere. Cut the corner over some tall trees or play it at 90-degrees into a picturesque island green. Either lay up or go for it. The course is part of a state park a couple of miles from the small, retro town of Cheraw, just off US 1. It must be a loss-leader. We found excellent, manicured conditions on the first day of Fall, 2023. They were not what one would expect for a public golf course, much less one with a 35-45 dollar fee that included a cart. Among public golf courses, this is a definite best place to play."
