“St. David’s Golf Club’s (SDGC) renovation of its Ross-designed course creates a more compelling visual experience, as the bunkers have been dramatically improved, the fairway lines more pronounced and the green complexes better defined. Tyler Rae expanded many of the green sizes and fairways to create more options and variety. Rae used Ross drawings to restored 12 greens while 6 greens were renovated with a Rae design. The bunkers are significantly more challenging in depth with Zoysa grass faces and top edges that in some cases do not fit naturally into the terrain. The Course routing remained the same except for the par-3 14th hole, which was redesigned and rebuilt. Overall, the renovation was a combination of restoring elements of Ross’s design and some of Rae’s own creative design. The Course now offers more shot options due to fairway and green expansion, and the bunker re-positioning does require more strategic thinking. The renovated bunkers also present a greater challenge, especially to the higher handicap player. Beyond those improvements, the Course remains relatively the same. SDGC continues to be one of the best neighborhood golf club experiences. The course renovations are in line with what the membership desired, which was a face-lift and better playing conditions."

“This Donald Ross course was recently renovated, returning it closer to its original design while making some changes, including moving and widening bunkers, to increase the challenge in response to today's distances off the tee. The green complexes are the highlight of the course, with the typical Ross crowned greens, protected by deep greenside bunkers that penalize the wayward approach shot. The yardage 6600 from the championship tees and wide fairways make distance off the tee not a priority. The course is really a "second shot" course, with tough green complexes and sloped run-offs that require accuracy and precision. Conditioning was in great shape and will only improve as the renovation "matures". Routing and topography make it a nice walking course. Overall, an enjoyable round."

“A super Donald Ross golf course that is typical of his style. Many down, then up holes with plenty of elevated greens. Very scenic and maintained to impeccable standards."

“This Donald Ross designed course is a fun, neighborhood golf club in a beautiful, wooded setting. The Course has two personalities – one side of the road has sweeping, up-and-down holes that flow with the terrain, while the opposite side of the road offers six good holes with character. Holes 1 thru 10 and 17 to 18 lay on ground that has elevation changes, but too often include a raised or lowered tee or green. Holes 11 thru 16, however, do offer interesting routing, shape and contour. At 6,608 yards from the back tees, this par 70 can be challenging, especially when the rough is up. Fairways are generous and the removal of trees years ago provide fairly open space for errant shots. The layout does lack variety, as too many holes follow the same shape and contour. Many of the traditional push-up Ross greens add to the challenge of uphill approach shots, and result in some holes playing longer than the listed yardage. Green surfaces do offer some undulation that requires proper approach shots for a good score. The best part about St. Davids is the bar crowd on a Friday night when you are 5+ deep – enjoy the venue – it’s fun!"
