“This is an old Donald Ross that saw its days of glory 60 years ago when Bobby Nichols won the PGA Championship there. It has recently been restored, faithfully, but not at overbearing expense. The course starts strong with a very difficult first hole requiring a right-center drive and then a full carry to an elevated green. It is easy to start with a double, or worse, if you are not accurate. The 3rd hole requires that the player know exactly where on the green the hole is located. You cannot be above the hole, and the steepness of the green makes a long putt difficult to measure - get it to the hole but not above. The 4th is a classic hard 4, and then 5 and 6 are relatively easy 4's - drive it right center, maybe not with a driver, and then a short iron to the green. Number 7 is a short 3 with a sloping green, back to front, and off the left side. Number 11 is a good long 4, and number 12 a precise short 4. The best hole on the course may be the par 3, 17th which can play 240 yards. While the course has great bones there are many better courses in the central Ohio area. Nevertheless, this course is a challenge to play once or in a 3-day tournament. Distance is helpful but hitting every shot precisely is much more important."

“A superb variety of hole lengths and directions, which provides the golfer a multitude of shot options depending on the amount of risk the golfer wants to face. The removal of a large number of trees from the property opens up the course and provides an aesthetically pleasing experience."

“This course designed by Donald Ross is rich in history and was fun yet fair to play. They have cleared out a lot of trees from the original design which opens the course up for some beautiful views and increases its playability for all golfers. Like most of Rosses courses, the greens were small and firm as well as there surroundings. Which gives a player quite a few options coming into the Green."

“A classic Donald Ross layout that has lost some of it's luster by not replacing trees that have been removed for various reasons. The river bottom holes of particular note with the issue. Wall to wall bent grass with super fast greens."

“This private, old Donald Ross course flies below the radar simply because it is in Columbus, where Muirfield Village, The Golf Club, Scioto, and Double Eagle shine. But don't overlook this course; it is definitely worth a visit if you can get on. A recent restoration cleared unnecessary trees, and the greens are lightning fast, with significant slope and movement. A ton of fun to play, and with the back tees at over 7,000 yards, a stern test. Definitely a must-play in the Columbus area."

“Well worth playing. The renovations of this Ross course are a tremendous success, with thousands of trees removed, improving sight lines and especially course conditions. The course flows, with some modest elevation changes. It is a great Ross course that has been brought back to life."

“A great golf course to play while in the Columbus area. A Donald Ross design that provided a challenging test. Built on two distinct levels, the course offers a variety of shot options and possesses a tremendous amount of character. The layout is unique and impressive as the course plays on those two distinct levels as it was built in an old quarry. I would regard this course as a candidate for consideration to be included on the best in state list."

“Columbus Country Club is an outstanding representation of a Donald Ross layout recently restored/renovated by a skilled modern architect, Keith Foster. The course plays into, along, and on top of a 30-foot embankment from an old creekbed, and this feature provides the course with quite a bit of character, as no fewer than 11 holes interact with the edge of the dropoff. Holes 1-3 play down into the ravine and back out of it, and holes 5-7 are on the lower level also. The 11th green is located just on the far side of a shallow arm of the ravine, and holes 12-14 play back down before rising back to the upper level on hole 15. The remaining holes rely mainly on bunkering for interest, and while less memorable, they provide plenty of challenge as well. Perhaps an unpopular take, but I'd rather play here than Muirfield Village!"
