Overview
Nassau Country Club was founded in 1896 and has since been expanded and renovated by a host of famous designers, initially by Seth Raynor in 1913, then by Herbert Strong in 1923, Rees Jones in 1981 and Tom Fazio in 2012 and 2021. The most recent renovations saw the addition of almost 700 yards to the course as well as the removal and strategic replacement of many of the course's bunkers. Regarded as the origin of the famed Nassau betting game, the course features tight sloping fairways with small greens known to be incredibly firm and ticklish. The standout hole is 15th—one of only two par 5s—played to a heavily bunkered fairway and well-guarded green.

“Championship caliber layout. The newly renovated bunkers are truly world-class, but do seem a bit out of place on the old school layout. Very challenging test with narrow fairways and firm and very fast greens. With many architects touching the property over the last 100 years, it's a remarkably cohesive layout. On occasion, holes feel a bit repetitive but there are a few true standouts, particularly the stretch of holes 5 - 7 and 11 - 14."

“Nassau CC has been touched by many architects including most recently Tom Fazio's group. Fazio's group succeeded in making the course very difficult, lengthening many holes and stretching the course to well over 7000 yards as a par 70. Now quite difficult, Fazio's group also made the bunkers uniform and had them built in Augusta National style, scalloped and with shaved edges. While the bunkering is certainly unique, I'm not sure it fits with the course and takes away from aesthetics a bit. Nassau is in excellent condition, with extremely firm and fast greens and fairways that run for miles. Notable holes include the stretch from 5-9, including some really strong par fours and a very memorable par 3 5th that plays as a long carry to a green surrounded by a moat of bunkers. New York and Long Island in particular is extremely deep and competitive. While Nassau is not at the top, it is a very worthwhile play and certainly has its strengths."
