Overview
Long Island is the true cradle of golf. The area boasts Shinnecock, National Golf Links, Friar’s Head, Maidstone, Garden City, Bethpage … we could go on and on. Alas, almost all of these courses are private and Bethpage has turned into a tourist trap with rounds consistently taking six hours on the Black course. If you’re in the area looking for no frills, cheap golf, our advice is to head toward the city and opt for Marine Park. This Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design is extremely well conditioned and offers a number of views of the water and New York City skyline. But don’t let its beauty fool you. With fast greens, winds off the Jamaica Bay and measuring close to 7,000 from the tips, Marine Park is no push over. —Joel Beall

“As far as NYC muni courses go, this is up there with Pelham/Split Rock as one of the better ones. While that’s not saying much, I give Marine park credit for a full length course, well kept greens, and some layout variety. The course also has better service than most NYC courses with a practice facility and a halfway grill. I’d prefer this over Van Cortlandt, Clearview, Kissena and the like"

“Marine Park is a RTJ design and probably one of, if not the best municipal course in New York City. Located in South Brooklyn near the water, this course is relatively flat but in good condition with nice views of the surrounding waterways and skyline. Worth a play if in the area, but there are better public courses in the area."

“With limited options in The 5 boroughs, this would be the top on my list. Originally, Robert Trent Jones designed this track. It has been recently updated and lengthened to fit the modern equipment area. The Practice facility is very good with a chipping and putting green, however the range is only 180 yards (no drivers/woods). Still enough to warm up the arms before heading out. Rounds can be painfully long on the weekends but it’s NYC. The greens are large and sloping with views of a distant NYC skyline. Overall, it’s a fun public course for an area with not many great options."
