“Kay did a very nice job with the renovation. I do really like some of the greens he has added, The first, second, and seventeenth are very good. I love the green on the ninth. For the public’s to see the aforementioned Road, Biarritz, and Reverse Redan holes is a treat."

“A good restoration of Banks' work. Template holes are abundant throughout the course. Recommend taking a cart as the walk can be severe up certain hills. Definitely a fun afternoon."

“Francis Byrne is a gem in the Essex County public course set. Original Banks holes have been restored to former glory and shine throughout the course. Template holes are prevalent and largely manage to work on a property that is severely canted down a hillside. A fun course to not miss."

“Where can you play a template of The Road Hole, the Eden featuring Hell and Strath bunkers and another par three featuring a huge Biarritz green for incredibly bargain prices? Francis A. Byrne Golf Course. The minute you pull into the parking lot you realize this is no ordinary muni. The care and forethought that went to the renovation of this Banks layout make it special. Originally part of Essex CC, even the view of the holes you can see from the parking lot and pro shop area tell you this is special. The routing meanders up and down a large ridge on the front nine, while the back nine works its way down to the creek prominently featured on holes 16, 17 and 18. This course will challenge the best of players by rewarding good shots, offering several risk/rewards decisions on field shots and several extremely challenging greens. You should find a way to play this course."

“The renovation takes the old Banks / Raynor design and gives it a major facelift, making things feel new and modern but maintaining the best of the original design. Changes in elevation and template holes create many memories. Forget the "municipal" tag, this is a course worth playing."

“Similar to nearby Rock Spring, Francis Byrne is an old public course featuring really neat classical architecture from Charles Banks. While some templates have been dampened and conditions vary, this course offers good value and some neat holes such as the Biarritz par 3 2nd and wild par 4 5th. The course is built into a side of a hill and features plenty of elevation changes and decent challenge. This is definitely one of the better public options within an hour of NYC."
