“Fair and subtle. You get a sense of the shot values to come when teeing from the tips on the 4th---essentially a blind right bender due to trees the right side. Shot demands a fade. 16th is the toughest tee shot on the course---a truly blind downhill, dogleg left into a right sloping fairway. The 2nd from there is not easy. Course has many uphill shots and elevated greens with false fronts to test your irons. Greens are extremely large and played fast and true, even when sanded. Breaks were gentle ans severe at times, but straightforward. Plenty of breaks but no tricks. They have integrity, as does this wonderful, old-school golf course. Graded down on conditioning due to yellow jackets buzzing around in the bunkers. High scores for ambience. It's an easy walk. This place is low-key---the members low-key and comfortable with themselves and outsiders. The kind of club I would join if I lived in this region. Served as a very good introduction to Donald Ross architecture. There's an extra bonus in the clubhouse. Maggie Crichton, behind the desk, is the third generation of .her family to work continuously at Hope Valley since 1926. Two of her predecessors were golf professionals. There is a plaque commemorating the family's service right next to another for Byron Nelson. Pretty cool."

“I really wanted to like this course. It does a great job with junior golf and is a special family cub. Alas, this Ross design lacked interest. The course is laid out on some hilly terrain but doesn't challenge the better player."
