“Compass Pointe Golf Club is located in Leland, North Carolina, close enough to the coast to experience typically breezy conditions. This private course was designed by Rick Robbins and stretches to 7,085 yards from the back tees. Playing at a rating of 74.4 and a slope of 138, Compass Pointe is a fair and fun test of golf nestled within a gated, expansive golf-centric community. From the opening tee, the course winds through marshy wetlands with unusual elevation changes sprinkled throughout the course. Although fairways are not particularly narrow, many have OB stakes on at least one side with several also including a hazard on the opposing side of the fairway. Badly missed tee shots generally lead to reteeing or penalty strokes so there is a premium on accuracy. The course has fair bunkering from tee to green but they are not excessively penal or placed to frighten common landing areas. There is a good mix of holes at Compass Pointe with some long par 4s (3, 6, 11, and 16), 2 reachable par 5s (9 and 14), and a variety of par 3 lengths ranging from the shortish 156-yard 5th to the 220-yard 8th. No particular shot shape is demanded as there are multiple holes favoring a fade while enough others welcome draws. The ability to work the ball will greatly aid scoring, especially on the longer holes although a straight ball also works very well. The course conditions at Compass Pointe are generally quite good. Fairways were slightly spongy from recent rains so drainage might be a concern. The greens rolled true but were winter slow with moderate slopes and were not difficult. However, under drier, summer conditions, they could be made much firmer, faster, and more significantly more challenging. Bunkers were all very consistently well-sanded, firm but not excessively so, and very playable. Located in a golf community, homes surround the course and do come into play with any missed tee shots or approaches. The homes are not only in frequent play but are also visually difficult to ignore and do intrude upon the aesthetic appeal of the course. There are no spectacular holes but several that do stand out, particularly the long par 5 18th. It requires an accurate, long, tee shot to even think about clearing the hazard 80 yards in front of the uphill green. Laying up is no bargain as the bailout area narrows the closer to the green offering a choice of safety and a long 3rd or a bold play with significant risk. This is the best hole on the course and leaves either great satisfaction or frustration as the final experience of the round, but not disappointment. Compass Pointe is a fun, moderately challenging course that requires a controlled game to score well with accuracy rewarded and mistakes severely punished. The prevailing wind can be anything from a mild 5-10 mph to a much more significant and steady 20-25 mph. The routing also seems mostly unidirectional so that you are almost always playing into the breeze or the wind is at your back. At least it certainly seemed to be in my face during the entire round!"
