Stock Farm Club
Hamilton, MT • Private
Overview
Situated in the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana near the Idaho border, Stock Farm Club was developed in part by finance executive Charles Schwab. The club features a Tom Fazio design ranked among the best in the state, with terrific views of the Sapphire Mountains. Fazio took advantage of the dramatic setting by creating numerous elevated tees, which were restored in 2019 along with the greens and bunkers. Other activities at this exclusive private club include fly-fishing, horseback riding and shooting. Over the decades, Fazio's new courses have frequently debuted in high positions in the top 100 and Second 100 Greatest rankings, but Stock Farm is the rare specimen that has matured into the club, gaining in stature in the 25 years since it first opened.

“Fazio builds a rustic beauty with great layout and creativity. Great green complexes and interesting topography make this a course that can challenge daily. Many shot options with many beautiful vistas make this a must see."

“Charles Schwab was the founder of Stock Farm and financed it for many years during the early and maturing times through some difficult economic cycles. But it survived and is now a thriving club with a strong national membership. The Sapphire Mountain range serves as a wonderful and aesthetically pleasing backdrop to a well-designed and challenging golf course by Tom Fazio who weaved the holes in and out and through various valleys and ravines that provides not only interest but a variety of shop options. The front nine is more interesting with better golf holes than the back providing some dramatic shots that require both skill and imagination. While the par 4, fourth may not be the best hole on the golf course, it is certainly one of the most fun to play. From an elevated box, the tee shot requires the precise angle as it drops down to the lowest part of the property. A drive too far left leaves a blind shot to the green and too far right finds its way into a small riverbed. While amenities do not influence a course rating, the log cabin clubhouse with some of Schwab’s world class western paintings, the excellent food and staff service along with the on-property cabins all contribute to a great experience."

“Beautiful views of the western Montana mountains as a backdrop throughout the round. This Tom Fazio design from 1999 tests all clubs in the player's bag. Good variety hole to hole with what side of the fairways and greens that is best for the player to favor as well as good variety on what clubs are required off the tee.....ie you don't have to hit driver off of every tee."

“A fantastic property with the right mix of drama and strategy. While several holes compete for top billing, the drivable Par 4 - 3rd hole stands out for it's strategy off the tee, incredible 360 views and challenging green complex."

“First four holes are just as good as any in the top 75 or so GD top 100 courses. Hole 2 is a particularly good ode (albeit slight shorter) to hole 8 at Pebble Beach. 1 and 10 are cool dueling par 4 downhill holes with one being particularly cool from back tee with breathtaking vistas. Some weaker holes on the back that blend together a bit, especially the par 3s and 4s. Fairly consistent yardages and shots being called to hit by the player. Conditioning was very strong and nicely maintained green surround areas with true rolling greens. Variety, again especially on back, not particularly strong which blends in a bit to the shot options off the tee going down a bit in terms of score."

“Stock Farm is a very high-end private club with a beautiful Fazio design. The course is beautiful, immaculate, and one of Fazio's stronger designs. Worth a visit if in Montana, even if it requires extra driving!"

“A good Fazio layout that takes advantage of the trees and valleys. The clubhouse is a big log structure loaded with western art and atmosphere. A first class operation from top to bottom."
