Overview
John Fought and Minnesota native Tom Lehman were given 243 acres of rolling pastureland 25 miles west of Minneapolis to build Windsong Farm’s South Course. Opened in 2003, this golfers' club is designed to test the best players with a big ballpark of a course tipping out at 7,380 yards. Originally, the fescue-lined playing corridors were relatively tight. Fought returned and widened the fairways, which opened up different lines to drive and better angles into the greens. The collection areas around the greens allow for varying kinds of recovery shots back to the large, moderately sloping greens. While it is still a challenging golf course, it is very playable and a walker's paradise. The course’s second 18, the North, also designed by Fought, opened in the summer of 2024.

“Shot options: There are probably more shots that require a specific shot than providing an option, but this course does make you think hard on a majority of shots. When its windy, the psychology factor is quite high. ; Hole by Hole comments:Hole #1: Decent starting hole, longer drive pinched by bunker and marsh, raised green is the defense. ; Hole #2: Easy drive, but challenging approach that can vary widely based on pin position.; Hole #3: Harder hole than it appears, requires precise tee shot and approach. ; Hole #4: Need solid long iron, but not overly hard. ; Hole #5: Longer drives require more precision, slightly elevated green. ; Hole #6: Requires long drive to have reasonable approach, otherwise laying up in front of water on this par 4. ; Hole #7: Need precise iron to avoid bunker and water, harder than it appears. ; Hole #8: Requires long enough drive, false front makes approach tougher. ; Hole #9: Drive not hard, but 2nd and 3rd need to be precise. ; Hole #10: Average par 3. ; Hole #11: With a well placed drive, can score on this one. ; Hole #12: Wide fairway and reachable par 5, but can get in trouble while going for it. ; Hole #13: Short par 4 gives options off tee, but approach needs to be precise. ; Hole #14: Best hole on the course, one of the best par 4's in MN, requires good enough drive, but green has false slopes on 3 sides. ; Hole #15: Second best hole, requires a long enough drive and one that gets close to ravine to have iron in, otherwise may have to hit 3 wood in here. ; Hole #16: Solid par 3, but big green doesn't create too much anxiety; Hole #17: Average par 4; Hole #18: Hole is out of character with rest of course, with water/marsh on entire right side. ; : Challenge: When its windy, this is a hard course, greens usually run very fast. ; Layout variety: No boring holes out here, and has reasonably good variety; Aesthetics: It’s a pretty course in the fall, when the colors are turning, but still quite nice in the spring, with the fescue and water features throughout; Conditioning: Greens were running very fast, despite very wet spring. Have seen them lightning fast in the past, conditions are quite good here. I would imagine if I rate this course again when its drier, these conditions would be about the best in the state. ; Character: This course type is halfway between prairi-style, like Sand Hills, and marshy-parkland like Interlachen. It’s a pretty good course for this style. ; Fun: It’s a fairly hard course, especially when wind blows, so fun factor isn't high, but don't think that’s what the members are going for."

“This private course is located in Maple Plain, Minnesota and is located 30 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. It was designed my John Fought and Tom Lehman(2003). It was once a horse farm and is a links style course set on a beautiful piece of property that features wetlands, water hazards and rolling hills."

“Gets above 3 on conditioning alone. A big wide property in my estimation that was wasted on lack of creativity in hole design."
