Overview
Steve Smyers was given a hilly site in an old cherry orchard with views of Lake Michigan to route (and, as it turns out, to reroute) Lochenheath. A talented player known for designing challenging courses, Smyers is in form here with a course that demands proficient shot-making and strategic analysis. While he didn't bunker the course as much as he has others, it doesn’t need it—the terrain and green sites make for a stern test. The club has been both public and private, but it is private now.

“The golf course really makes you think around it. Many risk reward holes, as well as every type of shot you can think off: uphill, downhill, blind, you can score on the par 5 holes but can also make a big number."

“Really enjoyed this one, but this is a tough course that would beat up golfers who don't play well. Beautiful setting, would be tough to walk, but a fun challenge."

“A beautiful course with terrific views, and a stern test for better players, but probably too difficult for many."

“The greens are very fun here and local knowledge is essential. Members will know much better how to use the slopes and kickers to get close to the pin. Greens are lovely with a playable speed that allows you some creativity. Feels like they took a gated private golf course from Florida and transported it up to Michigan."

“Lots of variety including undulations throughout the course along excellent course conditions. Side note of the golf course Saugatuck Burger for lunch is a must."

“Steve Smyers built a big course on some very extreme terrain along the c oast of Lake Michigan. It is a bold course with some very fine green complexes. The greens are fast with a lot of slope and undulation."
