Overview
Regarded by some as the “Pebble Beach of the East,” Samoset is located on the Maine coast in Rockport. The course plays along the Penobscot Bay, with views of the Atlantic Ocean on 14 of the 18 holes. The third and fourth holes draw the closest Pebble comparisons. The par-3 third hugs the rocky shoreline, playing uphill to a double green, where a left miss will fall into the Atlantic. The par-5 fourth is Samoset’s version of Pebble’s 18th, hugging the coast as it doglegs to the left. Players choose how much ocean to take on off the tee, and the bold will be able to get home in two. The course turns away from the coast at the turn, before returning to the exposed hillside to close out the round. Though many of the holes are straightforward and lack architectural nuance, Samoset is a scenic opportunity to experience a Pebble-like aesthetic at a fraction of the cost.

“Samoset has several really fun and interesting holes along the water, but unfortunately, some relatively forgettable holes as well. The conditions are good, but lush with un-repaired fairway divots. There are several interesting green complexes, and one very cool double green on the water's edge. Greens roll somewhat inconsistent. The views along the water holes are really amazing."

“Gorgeous views on many holes of Penobscot Bay. Ideal resort golf with the course a one-minute walk away from the lovely hotel. Some challenging holes and straightforward holes, but you'll have fun. It's a tough walk sometimes between greens and tees!"

“The first 6 holes seem to live up to the ‘Pebble Beach of the East’ namesake. Great architectural design and utilization of water with elevation changes. The emotional roller coaster of holes 12 thru 14 + 16 taking the player into the woods and then returning back out to the ocean feels very Cypress Point’esq. Good utilization of various design features including chocolate drops, central fairway trees, framing mounds plus a double green. And the on course and backdrop aesthetics are second to none."

“Scenic ocean holes and not much else. Property is too small for an 18 hole golf course."
