Overview
Given there is very little elevation change on Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course, it was an impressive feat by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to create a captivating design that compensates for the bland terrain with subtle doglegs moving in each direction, with strategically placed bunkers and trees creating high shot values. As is typical of Coore and Crenshaw designs, the course blends into the natural terrain and creates ample challenge not with bold, artificial features but thoughtful hazards and hole shapes. The course sits on 250 wooded acres just north of campus and is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Home to the university’s men’s and women’s golf teams, the course has hosted numerous NCAA regionals as well as the 2019 U.S. Senior Open. Steve Stricker won his first USGA championship, winning by six shots over David Toms.

“The mostly flat nature of the site is disquised by the shaping of greens and bunkers. Many greens have the character and feel of push-up greens from the Golden Age of design contributing to the feel the course is much older than it is. The par 3 9th hole has a bunker that appears to be fronting the green while in reality it is 25-30 yards short, an excellent example of a technique used by Golden Age architects. The course is open to the public and definitely worth making effort to play."

“One criticism of this course is that there are no tees between 6,346 and 5,302 yards. Not a problem for a strong younger player or a member of the NDU Women's Team but for someone over 60 or 65 the tee structure seems deficient. Not even a hybrid set of tees on the scorecard. That being said, what we have is a good Coore-Crenshaw course on a very flat piece of property (except for the last couple of holes). The holes twist and turn a bit and offer some optionality off tee but basically this is a course where you want to keep it in the middle of the fairway off the tee and play from there. It is an early CC, so they have done much better things since then. It is slightly better than a mid-level Best in State but it is not going to knock you over. We are told to go back and look from the back tees and I did, but there was no place to fairly duplicate the approach shots a good player might have. The course was soft so played very long. Greens were good and so was bunkering."

“A very good course for a university course. It had some green conditioning issues in the heat of summer. A challenging course from the back tees."

“It is nice that a university course could have the Coore Crenshaw design pedigree. On my visit, conditioning of greens was less than ideal. A nice use of fairway bunkers and trees as obstacles on numerous tee shots. I really liked the pot bunker short of the green on the par 5 fifth hole. It was deep and flat and most second shots would get close to the front lip and have an awkward stance. The bunker and pin placement could often dictate strategy on that hole. A nice variety of lengths on holes. A good test from the back tees."

“Coore/Crenshaw design that is home to the Notre Dame golf teams. Nice variety of holes that require use of every club in the bag. Smooth greens and good conditions prevail. Reasonable price for a really nice public course. Definitely a must play when in the area."

“Well-conditioned accessible course that does a nice job of incorporating the property's topographical features. There was a good variety of length, hole shapes, and challenges to make this a fun everyday course."

“Considering how ordinary the land is, Coore and Crenshaw did an amazing job. It's also fun to be so close to Notre Dame's campus and to be able to see the Golden Dome as well."
