“Hospitality at this course starts right when you arrive, treating you like a member even if you are one of the public tee times. You are greeted, your bag escorted down to your cart, and sent into the pro-shop to check in. When you arrive to the carts, all is laid out, you are pointed in the direction of a very nice practice facility and sent on your way. The course overall has a challenge for anyone who wants it, stretching to over 7000yds from the back tees. The greens have some very tough pin locations, so if you find yourself chipping from the high side, watch out! Finally, at the end of the round you have a great outdoor deck from which you can grab a drink, snack, and think about all the great shots you hit!"

“Pretty good college course with "private conditions" for a day. Routing is adjacent to the river and has some good views."

“Set along the Housatonic River, Great River is one of a handful of Tom Fazio courses in New England and open to the public. The home course to Sacred Heart University, this is a strong public course and certainly among the top 2-3 in Connecticut. The conditions here are strong and there are some really nice holes such as the par 4 12th featuring a severe carry on the approach and the dropshot par 3 15th playing directly on the water. I wish the routing were a little more engaging, but this is certainly worth a play to those visiting the area."

“A long, demanding golf course from the back tees. Great variety of holes and shots to be played. Large greens are broken up in collection areas that need to be found to score well. The back nine is especially fun as it travels back and forth along the river. Uses the natural slopes toward the river very well."

“Strong golf course for the most part, but a few holes feel crammed in. Penal in places."

“The opening nine holes presents technical and tactical challenges while blanketed in visual splendor. The design is laid out in a way that a player can't help but notice the combination of risk/reward and aesthetic beauty that awaits a hole or two ahead (waterfall at #2 seen crossing the bridge at #1, the stone lined peninsula green at #4 seen from #3 fairway, #7 fairway centered tree seen passing on the way to #5 tee box, the view of the 50' fountain spraying from the pond fronted 9th green viewed just behind 8th tee box). The challenge and conditioning live up to the visual excellence of this course. The back 9 douses the senses with rich green fairways surrounded by soft tan fescue. Stone walkways, walls and bridges accentuate the charm of this golf course on holes 2, 4, 7, 10, 12, 13-16 and 18."

“Possibly the best public venue within 70 miles of NYC (save Bethpage Black). A great practice facility complements a golf course with phenomenal versatility and magnificent use of the river. The above average green fees here are well worth it. You will feel like you are playing a top flight private country club."
