“This private course was opened in 1957 and was designed by Bert Stamp and redone my Todd Eckenrode in 2022. It has the feel of being in a remote location southeast of downtown San Luis Obispo, CA Kikuyu fairways, poa greens. Great improvements were done to the course which includes a new irrigation and drainage system, removal of 300 trees which opens up the views thoughout the course and increasing the size of the water hazards on #9 and #14 which improves the aesthetics and allows for more water storage. Several of the greens were expanded to allow for more pin positions. All the tee boxes were redone, as well as the bunkers"

“Neal Meagher and I rebunkered the golf course 13 years ago and I was expecting the usual Todd Eckenrode magic - stem to stern transformation. Sorry to report the golf course is only fractionally better than we left it in terms of putting surface expansion and reshaping of bunkers. Very few were repositioned - Todd (close friend) admitted we got it right, so he just followed our path - but really just made the course much harder, not better. The putting surface contours are still the same vapid, heavy tilt from back to front - kept at Stimp 12, which makes it almost impossible to lag any putt - or stop it from rolling off the front of the green. The kikuyu is so over-fertilized it is like playing on velcro - so all the clever runups we designed have been erased. So, what we have in a pure aerial game exercise, with half the holes presenting a steep uphill approach with zero ground game approach opportunity. 6,400 yards plays like 7,000 and the members are mostly exhausted and frustrated - at least the ones I chatted with. A close, lifelong friend whose played SLO off & on most of his life (excellent player, just not long anymore) is rethinking his retirement plans because "a steady diet of SLO would kill me as I got older." If you're not going to cut the velcro - or starve it into submission - then at least don't elevate every green steeply over grade, fronted mostly by deep bunkers. The older members mostly hate it for a very good reason. The riparian areas look really good - but like his work at Brentwood (also kikuyu), they are more flash than substance, trying to ameliorate drainage issues. In fairness, the ongoing tree removal helped open up some vistas, but a constant stream of 185 yards, uphill with zero approach interest got deadly boring. The members are lovely people and I was treated so well, but until they dial back the green velcro, slow down the greens to sane levels and give weaker players a shot at running the ball onto the putting surfaces, this might as well be a 1980's Nicklaus period piece. Gawd, I really wanted to like it, but (like most everybody else) was so exhausted by the end, I could barely pick up my ice tea . . . . . . all that for 10 MILLION dollars."
