Overview
David McLay Kidd transformed an existing, tight 18-hole course when a new owner purchased more land to allow Kidd to create a new routing. A massive quarry was filled, and trees were removed to create expansive views of Los Angeles on this course just south of downtown.

“Incredible green complexes - huge greens, can use most of greens for pins. Bowls, half bowls and run offs make approaches a premium. Cannot hit driver every hole, requires some thinking. Feels weird having only 3 par 3’s on the course."

“Rolling Hills Country Club is a modern, strategic test set against the scenic backdrop of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with views of the LA skyline. Redesigned by David McLay Kidd, the course features wide corridors that invite aggressive lines off the tee, but penalize imprecise play with thoughtfully placed bunkers and natural contours. The firm, fast playing surfaces reward creativity and shot variety, particularly around the expansive, undulating greens. Steady winds and elevation changes add further complexity, demanding careful club selection and course management. With impressive conditioning and a layout that balances playability with challenge, Rolling Hills delivers a compelling golf experience for players of all skill levels."

“Some of the largest green structures in LA County. Tee shots are wide open with a multitude of options coming into the greens. Will need to putt and chip well to score. Views from hillside are outstanding and facilities are best in class."

“The course feels shoe-horned in to the land available between homes and, as a result, the layout is constrained. There's not a lot of variety in the types of holes; for example, there are very few doglegs and no long par 4s. The conditioning of the course is very good and the green complexes are quite interesting but they only partially make up for the challenged layout."

“Lots of risk reward off tee with cape type holes, but no water. Only one forced carry over water. Massive bent grass surrounds. Great greens."

“Ground game is available into and around many greens. Closely mown areas are one of the consistent design elements throughout the layout. Ragged edged bunker scrapes give you a links feel. Bunker in the middle of 18 green. Spectacular views of the LA basin, especially as night falls, and the San Gabriel Mountains, in the distance."

“Course Architect-David McLay Kidd, 2017. Wide open, links style course with very large greens and surrounds. Top notch course conditioning and amenities."

“David McLay Kidd has produced a design masterpiece. The course presentation hole-by-hole is outstanding, no two holes remotely alike, yet they blend together by the use of parallel elements to provide a wonderful golf experience for almost every level of player. The two issues for some are the depth of bunkers for the higher handicap player and the very wide landing areas for the low handicappers. The latter is balanced by the need to play proper angles into greens to get the ball close to hole placements."
