Haggin Oaks Golf Complex: Alister MacKenzie
Sacramento, CA • Public
Overview
This Alister MacKenzie design opened in 1932 and has hosted two USGA championships: the 1963 U.S. Amateur Public Links and 1992 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. Interestingly, the course has no fairway bunkers and instead defends itself with small greens that are heavily guarded by deep bunkers. With rates as low as $25 (walking), Haggin Oaks offers an affordable chance to play a course designed by the mastermind behind Cypress Point and Augusta National.

Review
“Alister MacKenzie designed many California courses. This may be one of his lesser known, lesser appreciated. Don't get the wrong idea, this is not Cypress Point, Pasatiempo or Augusta National. But it is affordable, in pretty good shape for a muni and it's a MacKenzie design, thoughtful, fair and fun. The greens are large, contoured and interesting and because municipalities maintain on the cheap, the greens speeds remain what they were in Alister's time, as they should. Equipment did not exist in the 1920s to create greens that roll 10 feet and faster on the Stimp. Modern architects and superintendents forget that too often, particularly when old courses get a "restoration." Go play this course, you will be happy and your wallet will not be emptied."
