Bayonet & Black Horse: Black Horse
Seaside, CA • Public
Overview
This pair of 18-hole championship courses is riddled with history: The Bayonet and the Blackhorse are built on Fort Ord, a retired U.S. Army training facility. General Robert B. McClure famously built the Bayonet to perfectly fit his chronic fade as a left-handed golfer—the course is known for its “Combat Corner,” a series of sharp doglegs on the back nine. The Blackhorse was added in 1964, 10 years after the Bayonet, and features panoramic views of Monterey Bay.

“This is a tough course that is worth playing, although it is not one of the best courses in the Pebble Beach area."

“Formerly a quirky course with lots of character, has been renovated into a fairly generic "modern" layout. Greens are way too large and undulating - leads to a lot of 3 and 4 putts and 5 hour rounds. Beautiful setting overlooking Monterey Bay. Conditioning has fallen off in recent years. Bayonet is a much better track."

“An okay course and a good value for the area, but not nearly as good as its sister the Bayonet."

“Good value for the Monterey area. Typically in good condition. Black Horse complements Bayonet well as they have different looks and layouts. Black Horse is much better golf course after the redesign."

“Love this course! One of the assistant pros at at Spyglass said that when the Stimp is up at Black Horse, there isn't a more challenging course in the Monterey Bay area. Several holes with great ocean views. Friendly staff. One of the most reasonable greens fees during the week for this caliber course anywhere in the country. I visit this area of California twice a year and always make it a point to play Black Horse. 214 yard par 3 (#2) is a really tough hole as well as the 586 yard Par 5 18th hole! Lots of elevation changes and most holes are well bunkered. One of the those courses where you should be prepared to use most of the clubs in your bag. If you have the time, also play Bayonet the sister course for a great day of 36 holes. I think Bayonet has a higher reputation, but I think Black Horse is more fun - both really good courses worth visiting."
