Overview
From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:
Every so often I come across a golf hole so compelling that it overshadows my memory of every other hole on the course. The par-5 18th at The Victory at Verrado is such a hole. It’s a dogleg right from the back tee (590 yards) over an irrigation pond (not really in play for big hitters) to a wide diagonal fairway with a rock escarpment on the left. The second shot is uphill to a green that’s tucked into a box canyon and protected front right by boulder outcroppings.
It’s an unusual hole visually, the first hole you see driving up the street toward the course entrance, and it sets the tone for this very unusual course that was built partly on the site of an old Caterpillar Tractor testing grounds where operators learned to shove around chunks of rock using D-9 dozers.
Victory is golf on the moon, but with some grass and full gravity, around rockscapes and washes, buttes and canyons. There’s a small black mesa just right of the first green that you drive completely around to reach the par-3 second tee, where you hit to a recessed green that turns out to be just yards away (and below) the first green. The long par-4 13th is blind off the tee to an S-shaped fairway that rumbles and tumbles downhill to a wide green. The 14th is a reachable par 4, but if you choose to lay-up of the tee, you must deal with a serpentine wall of rock that divides the fairway into high and low.
This is one inventive golf course. I’ll let Lehman himself sum it up: “Every hole gives you something unique and different, with the theme being a surreal, beautiful, rugged rock environment. We truly used whatever the land has given us, whether it’s a cliff or a nob or a boulder or a drop-off or a sudden rise up the mountain. We left the terrain all natural, so it looks like it’s been built right into the land.”

“Quirky, fun course built into some pretty extreme terrain featuring rock outcroppings and very original holes. I would recommend this course to somebody headed to Phoenix for golf before going to play many of the courses in Scottsdale."

“The Victory course is really good for shot options because of the quirky holes and firm conditions. There are lots of options off the tee, particularly on holes 1, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18. There are great options on the approach on a number of holes as well depending on how much risk you decide to take on off the tee: 3, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18. Overall, very strong on "ball striking" shot options because of the variety of ways you can play the holes, the green contours and the firm conditions. Good variety of options around the greens too - firm green plus nice turf means you have a multitude of options on pitches, chips, etc. The risk/reward is good on holes 2, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, and 18. Some stellar, really engaging holes out there - 7, 11, 13, 14 and 18. The par 3s are weak compared to most of the other holes - it is a weakness in the course. There are a lot of fun holes that are scattered throughout the round which keeps you engaged and wondering what might come next: 1-2, 6-8, 12-14 and 17-18. It is still desert golf which means lost balls, unplayable lies and damaged clubs from hitting off gravel. Definitely a place I would go back to or recommend to somebody heading to the area. It is truly a lot of fun to play. The greens at Victory are new and FIRM which makes the course play tough (in the best way). It is still desert golf so if you're offline, you're playing from the desert, taking an unplayable or damaging your clubs. There are a number of pinch points on holes that force you into a decision either off the tee or into the green on the approach: 1, 6, 7, 8, 9 , 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18. Lots of non-traditional quirky holes like 13, 14, and 18 where if you get out of position, it isn't easy to get back into position. Greens and green surrounds are very firm so you have to play all kinds of shots to consistently have a chance at getting up-and-down. Directionally, the layout is solid but not great with holes 3-5, 6-7 and 15-16 going in the same direction. Lots of great elevation change which gives some nice variety on layout - solid mix of uphill and downhill shots and lies. Course introduces rock faces and outcroppings as hazards on holes 1, 2, 9, 14, and 18. Cool humps and swales on 4, 8, 10, 13, 14 and 17. Great variety in par 4s which helped win me over on the Victory Course. The rock outcropping are a really cool aesthetic and beneficial to the overall aesthetic of the course. The desert is even less aesthetic than other areas of the desert because this portion of the desert lacks plants and wildlife - it's just gravel. The view from the tee on 18 is incredible - truly photo worthy. Construction on some of the course to expand the housing development. Course is weird combination of extreme construction through the rocks, which I think is very cool and pleasing to the eye, and construction through a housing development which takes away some of that luster. Kind of like the highs are high and the lows are low. The greens are pure and fast which makes the course play so much better. The green firmness is excellent where even short irons take large bounces before spinning and settling. The fairways are nicely firm and bouncing which allows you to hit more long irons or fairway metals off the tee - plays into course strategy. For a relatively new course, I'm impressed with the grow-in, although not perfect. Some minor wet spots by drains suggesting overwatering but most of these are out of play and they are really minor. The grass on the greens is almost purple so you know it is kept fast and firm. There is a great vibe at the clubhouse - it is informal with BBQ to go and more like a food truck than a clubhouse. The course is built INTO the rocks which makes some holes so cool. The "Country Club" is set at a different location which makes the golf course feel that much better for non-members. Built through a housing development / planned community which makes it very normal for the time period it was built, although I think there was a lot of emphasis placed on the course."

“The Victory Course at Verrado is a bit different than your usual AZ desert fare, built over an interesting landscape that once was the testing ground for the Caterpillar company. Because of this fact, I was expecting a bit more avant-garde design through a rocky moonscape, but this course is well on its way to being surrounded by houses, which already line several holes on the back nine. Regardless, there are some semi-blind shots and fun green complexes, so it's a fun play with a wild pond and rock-infused par 5 18th hole . The Victory is worth a round, but I feel like they missed an opportunity here for something truly unique,"

“At the Verrado (Victory) course, designer Tom Lehman made excellent use of quite rugged desert terrain and surrounding mountains to fashion a playable, resort course. With minimal, if not minimalist, bunkering, Lehman created mounds, swales, boulder-filled bunkers, and rock walls to keep your attention. There are some real forced carries from the back tees, although this course, at its core, really appeals to the high handicapper, with the ultra-wide fairways, tremendous rollout of tee shots, and generally open green sites that allow for a variety of types of shots around the greens. Unfortunately, the slow and bumpy greens that don’t hold shots well really put a damper on what could be a treat, as does the premium placed on the tee shot above all else. However, there are plenty of memorable holes and beautiful scenery here, but if you are looking for a strong challenge, this is probably not the best choice in the area."

“There are several holes here that are very challenging, but for the most part quite playable. The course is part of a housing development, but not many homes are built as yet. The course was in good condition when I played. I quite enjoyed the 18th hole."
