Overview
Like many of the most prominent old courses in Australia, the destiny of Royal Adelaide was altered by Alister MacKenzie’s visit to the continent in 1926. The original holes were laid out by founding members over two decades earlier, but MacKenzie provided the club a blueprint for major modifications to be undertaken after he departed. Though not all his recommendations were implemented immediately, those that were transformed the course, including rerouting holes, moving greens, expanding fairways to create angles and shaping holes around the site’s natural sand craters for greater strategic thrill. Slowly over the ensuing decades, more of his ideas have been installed, and Royal Adelaide is a riveting, authentic expression of MacKenzie’s design concepts that rivals his best work in Melbourne.
