You'll never guess why Ian Eagle stopped calling the Masters
G Fiume
Ian Eagle is one of the greatest play-by-play announcers ever, but it doesn't sound like you'll ever hear his voice again at one of the greatest sporting events around, the Masters.
Appearing on the On the Call podcast with Jake Marsh, Eagle explained why he walked away after six years of being part of the tournament's Amen Corner Live coverage. And you'll never guess the reason. Because it involves Justin Bieber. Well, sort of.
As the CBS legend tells it, his allergies always really acted up when he was in Augusta. And he didn't seem too comfortable staying in a rental house. Guess he's more of a hotel guy. Anyway, one year, he said the combination of the allergies, sharing a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, and a full-size Justin Bieber poster ("The full-on swooping hair version of Justin Bieber") hanging above his bed became too much.
"I think it was the Saturday night before the final round, I was just staring at Justin Bieber with a great deal of mucus," Eagle says in the clip. "And I had a conversation with myself. I said, 'Do I need to be here? Is this something I need to do?' And that was the end. Justin Bieber ended it."
Yeah, we did NOT see that one coming. Anyway, watch the clip here:
"Let's put it this way," Eagle added. "It was Bieber, not boogers."
Well said, Ian. Then again, we'd expect a man who talks for a living to come up with the perfect line to sum up that situation.
