Wynn Golf Club: An inside look at the host venue of Capital One's The Match

June 27, 2023

The Wynn Golf Club has become a go-to venue for Capital One’s The Match, hosting the showdown between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in 2021, the four quarterbacks in 2022, and in 2023 the teammates battle between Steph Curry/Klay Thompson vs. Patrick Mahomes/Travis Kelce.

Site of the old Desert Inn Golf Course, the first golf course built on the Las Vegas Strip, Tom Fazio transformed the dead flat piece of property purchased by Steve Wynn by moving more than 400,000 cubic yards of earth to create interesting contours and playing corridors. The dramatic elevation changes are surreal while sitting in the shadow of the strip, the Wynn casino and the convention center. Fazio and his son, Logan, renovated the course in 2019, creating eight new holes and refurbishing the other 10.

The par-70 layout features six par 3s, including the picturesque 18th, with a green perched at the base of a roaring waterfall. Wynn and Fazio collaborated on Shadow Creek, another Vegas oasis, and there are similarities between the two high-roller Vegas jaunts. But Shadow Creek is often compared to a course in North Carolina with its towering trees, pine straw and secluded feel, while Wynn overwhelms you with its Vegas feel, still in a classy way while you walking on impeccable fairways that also does have that same secluded feel—but it's impossible to ignore the flashing lights and towering skyscrapers beckoning in the distance.
