Save for later

Sometimes you hit a drive that feels so off that it ends up in the center of the fairway. Perhaps it’s the golf gods, your very expensive new driver or just a bit of luck finally going your way, but you have to take your wins whenever you get them.

Somehow, that’s exactly what happened when this well-intentioned wife applied for what she thought was the Masters lottery. She may not be going to Augusta National, but a trip to the Old Course may be on the horizon.

That’s right. According to Redditor cfram03, his wife “applied to The Open ticket lottery thinking it was for the Masters… and she won.” Now, the family has four tickets per day to Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the 155th Open at St Andrews.

“She applied for the lottery without my knowledge because she overheard me talking about The Masters,” he wrote. “She just walked into my office and showed me she won tix to The Open 2027, having no idea where it even takes place.

“I literally didn’t have this in any sort of plans lol. Should I take advantage of the random luck and make a boys' trip out of this?”

That’s a monumental golf trip seemingly out of thin air, and it feels like the latest in a long line of “the less you know, the better” when it comes to lucking out in sports. It’s never the ones who know college basketball that win March Madness pools, but the ones who pick based on their favorite colors or mascots they think could beat up the other ones. This is just the most recent example of that phenomenon.

The winners asked Reddit (sidenote: never ask Reddit anything) if they should go, and the answer was an obvious of course. Don't look a gift Scottish horse in the mouth.

“When do you think you’ll get the chance to go to the Open at the home of golf?” one commenter rightly asked. “Do whatever you need to in order to make it there.”
