It’s over. And Lilia Vu took care of the final piece.
The Americans took a huge 10-6 lead into Sunday singles of the Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia and, well, struggled early to put a lot of red points on the board.
Europe's Charley Hull and Georgia Hall recorded important victories early, the Americans bounced back with wins from Allisen Corpuz and Rose Zhang. But after that, most of the matches were up in the air.
Vu, playing in the ninth match of the day, against Albane Valenzuela came to the 18th hole 1 down but the Americans only needed a half-point to clinch the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017. Here is her approach shot here:
That was it. Valenzuela missed her birdie putt, Vu made this for birdie to win the hole, tie the match and win the Solheim Cup. Eventually the final score was 15½-12½.
“I can't even put it into words,” Vu said. “I felt like I didn't do my part this week and I wanted to get something done.”
Did she ever.
