Call it Nelly's Revenge: Korda makes remarkable par at nemesis No. 12

LANCASTER, Pa. — This week, golf fans cannot escape the fact that world-beater Nelly Korda somehow made a 10 on the par-3 12th hole in the first round of the U.S. Women's Open (without even hitting her tee shot in a hazard!), making it incredibly hard for her to make the cut, much less win her seventh tournament of the season and third major of her career.

As of this writing, she's still out there grinding, and sits at nine over, just one shot outside the projected cut. That was the situation Friday afternoon when she came back to no. 12, the scene of Thursday's carnage. It didn't start like a clean act of vengeance; her tee shot barely (and we mean barely) cleared the hazard and only by the grace of extra-long grass did it not topped back into the water. Standing just in front of the stone edge, Korda could only get her second shot to 20 feet, but facing down a par putt, with the entire world rooting for her, she absolutely stuffed it ... and then had some words for the hole. Maybe it was a humorous "thank you!" Maybe it was something else. Either way, it feels more than justified, and a light moment in what has otherwise been a frustrating major. Korda was one under for her Friday round, with six holes remaining to claw her way back to the good side of the cut.
