The first round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club got off to a slow start on Thursday with two weather delays before noon.
The early leader is Andrew Landry, a 28-year-old PGA Tour rookie who was at five under through 13 holes when play was halted for a second time. Landry leads Bubba Watson, Danny Lee, Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau by three strokes.
Defending champion Jordan Spieth is at even par through seven holes. He was having trouble on the 17th hole (his eighth), however, as his approach shot spun back into a bunker, causing him to get visibly upset.
Rory McIlroy, winner of the 2011 U.S. Open, is two over through eight holes, and seven strokes off the current lead.
Rickie Fowler, still looking for his first major victory, is three over through eight holes in a group with McIlroy and reigning Masters champ Danny Willett (two over).
World no. 1 Jason Day's tee time was 2:20 EDT, but with the delays, he may not play his first round until Friday. The same goes for Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Justin Rose.
