Two players hit the wrong ball at The Sentry, both were slapped with costly 2-shot penalties

Zalatoris and playing partner Cam Davis were both cruising late Sunday at The Sentry when one of the most bizarre things happen that you’ll ever see at a PGA Tour event.

Playing the par-5 15th hole at Kapalua, Zalatoris hit his second shot just short and right of the green. Davis went next and did the same. It wasn’t until they got to the green—they were grouped with Tom Hoge—that they both realized they hit the wrong ball according to rules expert Mark Dusbabek, who explained the situation on the Golf Channel telecast.

Under Rule 6.3c, it’s a two-shot penalty for each player who hit the wrong ball, and the mistake must be corrected by going back and playing the correct ball to finish the hole. Both Zalatoris and Davis did. Both made bogey when both would’ve made birdie.

At the time, Davis was inside the top 10. He then went on to bogey the 17th hole and birdie the 18th hole to shoot 69 and tie for 13th place at 22 under. Two shots better would’ve vaulted Davis into the top five, giving him a payday worth $300,000 more than his $410,000 check. Zalatoris shot 73 and tied for 26th place. Two better was a tie for 15th place at 21-under-par total.
