World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will make his 2026 debut this week at The American Express, spearheading a loaded field featuring four other top-10-ranked pros: Russell Henley, Robert MacIntyre, Ben Griffin and Justin Rose. Scheffler was supposed to make his 2025 debut here last year, but was taken out by a ravioli incident. Hopefully, he was more careful with his wine glasses last month.
Without Scheffler, Sepp Straka held onto a two-stroke win, despite a late charge from Justin Thomas. Straka dropped two eight-under rounds heading into Sunday and did just enough to capture his third victory. He’d go on to win the Truist Championship just a few months later.
A big story this week is the return of Will Zalatoris, who will be teeing it up on tour for the first time since the PGA Championship in May. He’s been banged up for the last handful of years but is looking to continue his solid golf from the Nedbank Golf Challenge in December. Other big names vying for an early-season win in California include Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, Ludvig Åberg, Tony Finau, Max Homa and Sahith Theegala.
This week's winner will receive a $1.656 million cut of the $9.2 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points.
TV Schedule
Golf Channel will carry live coverage from Thursday through Sunday from 4-7 p.m.
