To show just how unpredictable golf can be, a wine glass—and Scottie Scheffler's love of ravioli—threatened to change the course of PGA Tour history this offseason. Golf fans are well aware of this Christmas Day kitchen incident by now, but on Tuesday the World No. 1 gave his best explanation of how he wound up needing surgery to remove shards of glass from his hand.

“So when you make raviolis, we wanted to make them from scratch, so you've got to roll the dough and you've got to cut the dough, but we were at a rental house so we didn't have like the right tools and the only thing there was was a wine glass that we found,” Scheffler told reporters ahead of this week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “I had my hand on top of it and it broke, which side note, I've heard nothing but horror stories since this happened about wine glasses, so be careful. Even if you're like me and you don't drink wine, you've got to be real careful with wine glasses."

Yikes. Scary stuff. But fortunately, Scheffler will be back in action this week at Pebble Beach after a historic 2024 campaign in which he won seven official PGA Tour events, plus Olympic Gold and Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge. All told, he earned more than $63 million, easily a record. And that doesn't even include his crypto haul from teaming up with Rory McIlroy to beat LIV Golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in December.

But because of all those riches, Scheffler's teammate in Vegas had a logical reaction when asked about the ravioli accident.

"I think he made enough money to hire a chef," McIlroy said on Tuesday. "It's like why are you cooking yourself? I was hoping it was going to be more of a fun story than that. We were together in Vegas on the 17th of December and played that match with Brooks and Bryson. Firstly, just concern and hope he was OK. It sounds like he is, it's good that he's teeing it up this week. Yeah, get a chef."

It's a fair point. Especially for someone who needs their hands to work as much as a tour pro. But when told about McIlroy's comments, Scheffler had a hilarious response.

"I've got a chef, her name's Meredith," a smiling Scheffler said, referring to his wife. "She's pretty cute."

Well played, Scottie. Especially on the homefront.

In any event, Scottie and Rory are the two betting favorites this week in the PGA Tour's second signature event of the season. But they're probably the last two guys we'd wager on doing any cooking while there.
