Ryder Cup 2023: Xander Schauffele admits to not remembering a thing about the victorious U.S. presser at Whistling Straits

September 26, 2023

It remains, in my humble opinion, the best clip to come out of the American team's victorious press conference at the 2021 Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits. And no, it's not Dustin Johnson claiming he can still hang with the young guns when it comes to partying, which was both hilarious and unequivocally true. And no, it was not Brooks Koepka giving DJ "the look" when DJ began slurring/rambling about Scottie Scheffler.

No, it was the clip of Xander Schauffele puffing on a cigar and randomly winking at someone in the press room, indicating that he had a full buzz on before the actually party even got started. One does not simply wink at another human whilst sober. That's just science:

Oh yeah, that man was cooked, which just about anyone who was there or came across this video on social media could tell in one millisecond. Yet one reporter on site this week had the unmitigated GALL to ask Schauffele if he remembered answering a question that day in Wisconsin about the U.S. team having "unfinished business," meaning they'd still not won across the pond in 30 years.

Schauffele, without skipping a beat, cooked up the perfect response.

"I'm not going to lie, I don't really remember answering any of your questions at Whistling Straits, post-tournament," he said. "But it sounds like a pretty good answer I came up with."

Yeah, we doubt anyone from the 2021 U.S. squad remembers anything after the final putt dropped, and possibly earlier than that, too. Remember, half the guys knew the outcome was no longer in doubt and began double-fisting as the rest of the team finished up their singles matches. You can't possibly expect any of them to remember something they said in a presser, though we appreciate the question because it led to Schauffele's A+ answer.
