Rory McIlroy has all-time 'One of us!' moments at Tour Championship

Save for later

As Gary Woodland reminded us last Sunday, even the best golfers on the planet aren't immune from the occasional topped tee shot into a creek. On Friday, Rory McIlroy gave us a similar reassurance on Friday.

The reigning Masters champ has arguably a better track record than anyone at the Tour Championship having claimed a record three FedEx Cups there. But it doesn't look like he'll add a fourth to his mantlepiece this week after needing to hit three chip shots from virtually the same spot during his second round.

The short-game shocker occurred on the par-4 third hole at East Lake after McIlroy hit a poor approach shot from just 115 yards out that missed the green. But he compounded that error by missing the green on two more consecutive chips that came up short of the putting surface and rolled all the way back to his feet. Have a look:

That's rough. But before golf fans get too wrapped up in the "One of us!" chants, know that McIlroy hit his third attempt to about a foot to save double bogey.

But another bogey on the following hole dropped him into a tie for last place among the 29 golfers still competing at East Lake at the time of this post.
