Save for later

The Players Championship is not yet a major, but major winners have had great success at TPC Sawgrass, with six of the previous seven winners having one on their ledger. Cameron Young prevented it from becoming seven of eight as he caught Matt Fitzpatrick with an electric birdie at the island-green 17th and the taking the title when the 2022 U.S. Open winner bogeyed the last.

Young put on a major-like performance on Sunday with a five-birdie, one-bogey 68, which was enough to first overtake Ludvig Aberg and then, eventually, Fitzpatrick.

Two keys swings came at the two back-nine par 3s. At the 169-yard 13th, Young watched Fitzpatrick knock it to four feet then stepped up and matched it with a 7-iron to just inside him, the birdie keeping him within striking distance. The 7-iron is a Titleist 631.CY prototype muscleback blade made just for Young.

A new version of Titleist’s Spin Milled grooves features 5 percent more volume than the SM10 to channel away debris and retain more spin. A new directional face texture provides increased friction and prolongs contact on the face, delivering reliable spin on short shots. A heat treatment is applied to increase the durability of the groove edges to prolong maximum stopping power. Additions to the line include a stronger pitching wedge at 44 degrees and a 60-degree K-grind option with 12 degrees of bounce. The center of gravity is identical across all grinds in each loft, meaning you don’t have to compromise on your launch window for a specific grind choice. Top 5 in Performance, all handicaps SPECS: 27 options (44-60 degrees), 6 sole grinds, 4 finishes

At the 134-yard 17th, Young knocked his 57-degree Titleist Vokey SM11 to 10 feet and made the putt to tie for the lead.

Young gave Golf Digest an interesting tidbit about his gear a little more than a year ago. “I have four wedges but only two lengths,” he said. “The 48 and 52 are the same, and the 57 and 62 are, too. It helps me control my yardages.”

Going back to the major winner theme, you might want to bet on Young to win his first soon. Not only have the last two Players champions won the Masters, but the last Players champion who didn’t have a major was Cam Smith, who won in 2022 then added the Open Championship a few months later. Place your bets now.
