Players 2025: Jordan Spieth holes bunker shot for eagle, gets off to an electric start at TPC Sawgrass

March 13, 2025

Jordan Spieth got off to an absolutely electric start to the Players Championship on Thursday. Of course, most golf fans would just characterize that as a normal start for the three-time major champ.

Starting his tournament on the back nine, Spieth birdied No. 10 after nearly holing his approach shot from 124 yards. On No. 11, he holed a bunker shot for eagle as he quickly jumped to three under through two holes to take the (very) early lead at TPC Sawgrass.

Have a look at Spieth's latest short-game masterclass:

Nice hands. In true Spieth fashion, he blew his tee shot on the following hole right, but after taking a free drop, hit a brilliant recovery to seven feet . . . and missed the birdie putt.

Spieth is winless in his last 59 PGA Tour starts, but after having offseason wrist surgery, he's shown signs of returning to peak form in 2025 with a T-4 at the WM Phoenix Open and a T-9 at the Cognizant Classic in his most recent start.

However, he has a brutal record at TPC Sawgrass with six missed cuts in 10 starts. His lone top 10, a T-4, came all the way back in his debut in 2014. In any event, it's a great start for the 31-year-old Texan.

UPDATE: But wait! There's more! Spieth made double boey on 14 and bogey on 15 to drop back to even par. So what did he do on 16? Chip in for another eagle.

Obviously.
