PGA Tour winner pulls off 'absolutely astonishing' shot, promptly misses kick-in birdie putt
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for Matt Wallace during the opening round of the Qatar Masters. And it all happened on one hole of the DP World Tour event.
The past PGA Tour winner found himself in a tough spot on the par-5 ninth hole at Doha Golf Club after hooking his drive left into a native area. After taking a penalty drop, Wallace was still in jail. Well, in the desert.
But then he pulled off what the announcers accurately described as an "absolutely astonishing" shot. Have a look at this insane 3-iron from 286(!) yards that rolls to within three feet of the hole:
Incredible stuff from Wallace. So what's the problem? Well, what that highlight doesn't show is that he missed the ensuing birdie putt. And actually had to make a little three-footer coming back for par:
Ouch. That hurts.
And that's why, as our Christopher Powers passionately wrote yesterday, a birdie putt should never be conceded. Even to the best players in the world.
In any event, Wallace still had a solid day after shooting three under par. But he had to go to bed thinking about the little missed kick-in that messed up a career highlight-reel moment.
