PGA Tour caddie delivers all-time burn at Torrey Pines after his player hits tee shot into Pacific Ocean

    February 19, 2025

An important job for any caddie is to let his player know where the trouble is to stay away from on a given hole. Sometimes, however, that's pretty obvious.

The fourth hole at Torrey Pines' South Course is one of those obvious places. Standing on the tee, you clearly see that there's a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean that runs all the way down the left side of the hole. In other words, you don't need anyone to tell you to "favor the right side."

Of course, that doesn't mean that golfers still don't find the gigantic hazard. Even the best golfers in the world as we saw last week at the Genesis Invitational. Even Ludvig Aberg, who won the PGA Tour signature event, lost a golf ball left on No. 4 during Sunday's final round.

Anyway, when another player made the same mistake, it led to an all-time vicious burn from his caddie. Although, that caddie didn't deliver said burn to his boss' face. Here's the story from caddie Aaron Flener, via PGA Tour pro Michael Kim:

Story thx to Aaron Flener: A player was playing the 4th hole at the Farmers, and hit it left into the hazard. On the next hole (player in bathroom), his caddie pulls out his phone and shows the rest of the group a map of the US, and says “He had the ENTIRE UNITED STATES to the right and my guy hits it into the Pacific Ocean.”

Ouch. Actually pulling out a map of the U.S. is cold. But, hey, the caddie had a point.

Indeed, it is, Aaron. And you don't have to be a geography major to know that. The moral of the story? Always aim away from the Pacific Ocean. And always assume that your caddie is mocking you when you take a bathroom break.
