KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C—Sam Burns withdrew from the PGA Championship mid-round Thursday with injury.

According to the PGA of America, Burns cited a back injury as the reason for dropping out.

Burns got off to an inauspicious start at the Ocean Course Thursday, making a double at the par-5 second and a triple at the par-3 sixth. Burns made the turn in 41 but did not play the 10th.

Burns had entered Kiawah Island on a tear, finishing T-4 at the Zurich Classic, capturing his first PGA Tour victory at the Valspar Championship, and coming in second at last week’s AT&T Byron Nelson. He is fifth in the FedEx Cup standings and ranks 20th in strokes gained.

This was Burns’ second career PGA Championship appearance. Earlier in the day, Francesco Molinari withdrew before the tournament also citing a back injury.
