PGA Championship 2025: Tour pro gets engaged (!) on eve of major championship debut

May 15, 2025

It's been a big year for Johnny Keefer, who was still playing college golf 12 months ago. After turning pro last spring, the Baylor product's hot play on the PGA Tour of Americas earned him his Korn Ferry Tour card for 2025. And more hot play there, including a first win, earned him a late invite to this week's PGA Championship by virtue of being in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

And that's where things have gotten really exciting for the 24-year-old. Before even hitting a single shot in competition at Quail Hollow.

That's because Keefer took a different kind of shot on the eve of the tournament by proposing to his girlfriend. And she said, "Yes!" Obviously. Or, we wouldn't be writing this post.

Congrats to the lucky couple! And congrats to Johnny to making a bit of unofficial golf history, because we can't remember a golfer ever getting engaged on the eve of their major championship debut.

As far as prepping for a (big) golf tournament goes, it's certainly an unusual move. But no matter how he plays at Quail Hollow, this is already guaranteed to be a special week for the young man. Buuuuuut, playing well would be better. After all, weddings are expensive.
