Big purses and serious major host sites highlight LPGA Tour’s 2022 schedule

The LPGA Tour announced its 2022 schedule, boasting the biggest purses the tour has ever seen and famed golf courses hosting its major championships. For now, players will be competing for $85.7 million overall during the 34-event season, with tour officials saying more purse increases are to come. Most notably, the CME Group Tour Championship is increasing its purse to $7 million from $5 million, with the winner taking home $2 million. Before now, the biggest winner’s prize money payout in the history of women’s golf was $1.5 million.
The CME is just one of nine tournaments to increase its purse. The Chevron Championship, formerly known as the ANA Inspiration, now has a $5 million purse—$1.9 million more than in 2021. This coming year will be the last in which the championship will be held at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The event has been played in the California desert since its inception more than 50 years. The major is expected to move the Houston area in 2023.
The AIG Women’s Open also features a significant jump in prize money as well, up to $6.8 million from $5.5 million in 2021. The host club is newsworthy too in Muirfield getting the nod. In 2019, the club admitted its first female members after a 275-year history of male-only members. While the club has hosted the Open Championship on 16 occassions, this will be the first time the Women’s Open will be played there.
The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is also being played at a course that has hosted multiple men’s majors: Congressional Country Club. This is the first time a women's major will be played at the famed course outside Washington, D.C.
