UTTOXETER, England — LIV Golf announced it will head to the South Africa for the first time when the league stages an event there next season.

The league revealed on Saturday, during its LIV Golf UK tournament, that LIV Golf South Africa will take place in Steyn City, outside of Johannesburg, March 20-22, in the first tournament of a multi-year agreement.

South African players were among the first to join LIV Golf in its inaugural season in 2022, including 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel. Oosthuizen captains the Stinger GC team on LIV, an all-South African squad including Schwartzel, Dean Burmester and Branden Grace.

The Club at Steyn City, designed by Jack Nicklaus for a 2014 opening, has hosted two DP World Tour events and a Sunshine Tour stop in the past three years.

“It’s always special to compete at home, and I’m incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time," Oosthuizen said. “For Branden, Charl, Dean and I to play in front of our fans, friends, and families will be an unforgettable experience.

“South African sports fans love their golf, and I am sure they will turn out in large numbers … South Africa has given so much to us, and now we get to give something back.

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, said the tournament would have a unique identity among LIV’s 14-event schedule. “Visitors will truly feel that they are in Africa, with access to a Big 5 reserve with lions and elephants—Dinokeng—less than an hour’s drive from Steyn City,” he said. “No LIV event will be anything like this one and we are confident that the world’s golf lovers will make travelling to ours, the world’s most beautiful country, a must-do trip on their calendar.”

The South Africa announcement comes after LIV also confirmed the league would return to England next year for its JCB Golf and Country Club event from July 24-26, while LIV Golf Adelaide was locked in for February 13-15.
