Jean Van de Velde goes full Jean Van de Velde at PGA Tour Champions event
Octavio Passos
Jean Van de Velde was back in action at this week's Trophy Hassan II on the PGA Tour Champions. Unfortunately, that meant the Frenchman was also back to making big numbers on the golf course.
Van de Velde, who turns 59 at the end of the month, plays tournament golf sparingly these days. So a rough round or two in Morocco shouldn't have come as too much of a surprise. But his scorecard was crazy enough to warrant a mention.
Starting Thursday's round on the par-5 eighth hole, Van de Velde, the man most famous for making a triple bogey on the final hole of the 1999 Open Championship when he held a three-shot lead, opened with par. But then things quickly went off the tracks. Way off the tracks.
Over the next eight holes, Van de Velde shot 13 over par. And that included a quadruple-bogey nine on No. 12. Have a look for yourself:
Wild stuff. Now to Van de Velde's credit, he only shot one over the rest of the way. But his score of 87 was still the worst of the day by four shots.
On Friday, he fared a bit better, but was the only player in the field to fail to break 80. Add it all up and Van de Velde finished the two days in last place by six shots. Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey leads by one shot at 12 under through 36 holes.
